Big Ideas Night with Ta-Nehisi Coates

Organizer Brooklyn By The Book X RH Big Ideas Night

November 18, 2018 in Brooklyn, NY

Join us for a Big Ideas Night with Ta-Nehisi Coates as he discussses the midterm elections, the state of American politics, and the historical currents that inform our present.

“We were eight years in power” was the lament of Reconstruction-era black politicians as the American experiment in multiracial democracy ended with the return of white supremacist rule in the South. In his sweeping collection of new and selected essays, now in paperback, Ta-Nehisi Coates explores the tragic echoes of that history in our own time: the unprecedented election of a black president followed by a vicious backlash that fueled the election of the man Coates argues is America’s “first white president.”

Brooklyn By the Book is a collaboration between Community Bookstore and Congregation Beth Elohim.

Random House’s Big Ideas Night series is a forum for thought-provoking conversations with writers on the topics of politics, social justice, world affairs, technology, philanthropy, and more. These focused dialogues offer exclusive access for guests to dive deeper into a recently released book with fellow readers, and to network and engage directly with the innovators behind it.
