PAST EVENTS:

One World Ideas x Action: Banned Books Week

One World hosted a special Ideas x Action virtual event to investigate—and celebrate—Banned Books Week (September 26 – October 2, 2021), the freedom of ideas, and the necessity and power of even the most discomforting truths.

Hosted by Chris Jackson, One World Publisher and Editor-In-Chief, and co-sponsored by the American Library Association, Ideas x Action: Banned Books featured authors who have faced censorship directly, including Ta-Nehisi Coates (Between the World and Me), Nikole Hannah-Jones (The 1619 Project), Ibram X. Kendi (How to Be an Antiracist), and Bryan Stevenson (Just Mercy)—as well as authors who have joined the fight against censorship, including Cathy Park Hong (Minor Feelings), Heather McGhee (The Sum of Us), and more—in a mix of live and recorded video appearances that reflect on the question, “What do you wish you had learned in school, but didn’t?”

One World Ideas x Action: An Inheritance of Secrets

How do our families’ stories and secrets shape us?

Danielle Geller, author of the memoir Dog Flowers, and K-Ming Chang, author of the novel Bestiary, in conversation with One World senior editor Nicole Counts, explore the experience of uncovering truths through writing, and the constraints—and possibilities—inherent in our individual heritage. An intimate discussion, this conversation touches upon mothers, mothering, birds, and how both writers uncovered family secrets in the process of writing their books.

One World Ideas x Action: Art as Resistance

How do we truly see each other and the world around us?

Riva Lehrer, author of Golem Girl and Molly Crabapple, author of Brothers of the Gun, in conversation with One World publisher Chris Jackson, discuss art as resistance, art as a source of profound power, and art as a path to self-transformation. One World’s mission has always been to find books for readers who want to rethink the past, understand the present, and imagine new futures.

One World Ideas x Action: The Feminist Climate Renaissance
